Do not store petrol in the home

Francis Maude suggests otherwise.

With Government and Union officials publicly debating the possibility of Tanker Driver strikes many petrol stations have already run dry due to demand. Francis Maude has added even more fuel to the fire by suggesting people store petrol in jerry cans whilst many safety authorities rejected this as it is unsafe to store petrol in the home.

Reports of domestic fire that resulted in injury when storing petrol came in yesterday as a woman recieves 40 per cent burns from incorrectly containerising petrol in the home. Further details of the fire can be found here:

With government officials suggesting this is safe, we hope this is not the start of domestic fire trends and that better information is distributed regarding petroleum fire safety issues.

There are set legal requirements for storing petrol in domestic environments, these are detailed by the HSE here.
